Cellulite Facts
Cellulite develops when fat cells swell and the surrounding fibrous tissue changes texture, causing a pulling effect and giving skin the famous dimpled look. Although maintaining a healthy weight may help prevent more cellulite from forming, it's worth remembering that slim people too can still be prone to cellulite.
Certain genes are required for cellulite development. Genes that predispose an individual to particular characteristics associated with cellulite, such as gender, race, metabolism, distribution of fat and circulatory insufficiency.
Many people also believe hormonal factors such as estrogen, insulin, thyroid hormones and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process. As cellulite is trapped in the connective tissue, its important to keep active to improve circulation to the area and help prevent the possibility of more becoming visible.
Smoking accelerates the breakdown of collagen in the skin, making it less elastic, and so worsening the appearance of any lumps and bumps. Avoiding processed foods, high fat products and refined wheat and sugar and generally eating a healthier diet, will also help decrease the development of additional cellulite being formed.
